On Thursday, November 20, Nurture Nature Center held a program on ‘Pipeline Science: Environmental Considerations for Communities’. Presentations by Dr. Dru Germanoski, Professor of Geology at Lafayette College, and Mark Gallagher, consultant with Princeton Hydro, outlined the risks presented by the geology in some of the areas on the route for the PennEast Pipeline and described the types of long-lasting impacts on the environment to be expected, the misleading propaganda from the pipeline companies, and the ways the permitting process often fails to require or deliver promised environmental protections.
I want to emphasize that this pipeline is not only a threat to our area — it will enable greater production & export of natural gas from the Marcellus Shale region. This means more fracking, more toxic pollution, and the destruction of more people’s lives & health. In addition, scientists at Cornell University have shown that the total carbon impact of unconventional natural gas extraction and transmission is worse than coal!
