As we publish this 23rd issue of Sustainable Lehigh Valley, we’d like to pause and mention a few things we’ve been thinking about.
We are pleased to announce a special edition of Sustainable Lehigh Valley for Summer 2024, featuring work by high school students. Check out page 11 to learn how your work can be featured in this edition!
In 2018, all the essays — and even the cover — were done by students or recent graduates. (see ‘Looking back…’, page 46). 2018 also marked the first issue of Left Turn, a publication focused on subjects related to the challenges of global capitalism and moving beyond it to a more sustainable world. (See inside back cover for more information.)
For the last few years, the cost of paper has soared, so we’ve worked to make the PDF format more readable and reduced the number of copies we print. PDFs for every issue are available for free download from our website.
Since its founding (see ‘How the Alliance Began’), the Alliance has considered education a key element of addressing climate change, and has involved many interns in this work. (See ‘Schools: Climate Change Is Here Now’) to learn more about how Lehigh Valley schools can do better to prepare students for the climate emergency.
Since 2004, Alliance has provided internships to high school and college students. Alliance internships are anything but routine — the focus is on rethinking the system, and interns are directly involved in raising public awareness and creating change. [see internships.sustainlv.org]
As international conflicts continue to emerge across the globe, we call your attention to the impact of warfare on the environment. Don’t miss “War is More Than What You Think It Is” to learn about its climate impacts. (And it can be hard to concentrate as the world’s first livestreamed genocide is underway!)
In this issue, we ‘re including the Principles of Environmental Justice from the 1991 People of Color Environmental Justice Summit to remind us of all the injustices that continue.
For this issue, we added an expanded section with writers’ and artists’ statements about their work. Check it out to experience the pieces of this issue from the artist’s perspective!
