Following is a very brief overview of the types and sources of data needed for a typical GHG inventory. Most of the data usually comes from the Faciliities or Plant Operations department. For more detailed information see the Clean Air-Cool Planet GHG Inventory spreadsheet and user guide.
Electricity Use
(Usually available from Facilities/Plant Operations)
- Monthly electric utility bills and/or spreadsheets used to analyze usage
Heating and Other Stationary Combustion
(Usually available from Facilities/Plant Operations)
- Fuel Purchase Records (#2 or #6 heating oil, natural gas, coal)
- Inventory of Stationary Combustion Facilities
- CEMs [Continuous Emission Monitoring systems] Data (if available)
Mobile Combustion
(Usually available from Transportation)
- Fuel Purchase Records (quantities and types of fuel)
- Fuel Inventory Records (for on-campus storage tanks)
- Vehicle Miles Traveled (for each vehicle)
- Inventory of Vehicles (Make/Model/Year)
NOTE: Also include fuel for any other vehicles used on campus, including Facilities, Information Technology, and Campus Police. (If battery-powered, the power to charge them is already included in electricity usage)
Cogeneration (if applicable)
(Usually available from Facilities/Plant Operations)
- Fuel and Efficiency Data from Supplier
- Inventory of cogeneration installations (wind, solar, micro-hydro, etc.)
- Monthly Utility Bills or statement crediting surplus power
Solid Waste
(Usually available from Facilities/Plant Operations)
- Invoices or statements from trash hauler
Refrigerant Use
(Usually available from Facilities/Plant Operations)
- Invoices or statements from supplier
Other Data
- Travel for sports, conferences, study abroad
- Commuting by faculty, staff, and students
- Dining services – sustainability, composting
- Grounds – use of artificial fertilizers & pesticides
