Many communities have found that that state laws bar municipalities from taking actions stronger than whatever standards may be set by the state—even when those standards are nowhere near adequate to protect public health. Communities in PA & other states are taking action to overcome these restrictions.
Current threats face include drilling in the Marcellus Shale — even communities outside the immediate drilling area face contamination of their water supplies. The controversies continue over dumping toxic sludge, incineration of waste, and waste from industrial farms.
