Did you see the pathetic column on LehighValleyLive / Express Times the other day? [‘A different approach to cleaner school buses could save Bethlehem Area tax dollars‘] It is full of distortions and outright lies, but this is not too surprising coming from a propane-industry trade group.
Electric buses are far superior to propane (and natural gas) both from a GHG and a local air pollutant perspective — even when considering all upstream emissions.
Jeff Irvine at WSP Group provided some great resources for further information:
- Argonne National Lab’s calculator shows clearly that electric buses are far superior to propane (and natural gas) both from a GHG and a local air pollutant perspective – even when considering all upstream emissions (e.g. power plant emissions to generate electricity).
- Electrification Coalition provides a variety of background information and resources
- VEIC has a one-page qualitative summary of benefits and comparisons. [Vermont Energy Investment Corporation]
- WRI’s Electric School Bus Initiative notes that ‘Electric school buses have zero tailpipe emissions, meaning they offer clean and healthy rides. It’s time for an equitable transition to electric school buses nationwide – because every student in every district deserves clean air on their ride to school, starting with those most impacted by diesel pollution. Electrifying the entire fleet of U.S. school buses would also reduce GHG emissions’ which is essential in these days of impending climate catastrophe!
