There’s no shortage of things that need to be fixed in the world, but the system in which we live has defined democracy so narrowly that it is often difficult for communities and individuals to bring their interests, knowledge, and values to bear on solving these problems — many of which reflect basic issues of human rights, justice, poverty & inequality, health, sustainability, and war & peace. (Unfortunately, too many people seem to be waiting for someone else to fix things, and that’s a major part of the problem.)
What do you think is the most important area for action? — This is your chance to do something about it and to develop your understanding and problem-solving abilities by working for change here in the Lehigh Valley.
You can create your own project — with support from the Alliance — or work with an existing project. (You might also want to check out our internships in Barriers to Sustainability, Campus Sustainability, Climate Action, Community & Restorative Justice, Healthy Food for Healthy Communities, Socialized Costs for Private Profits, and Sustainability In Business.)
Interns will participate in some or all of the typical activities of community organizing and activism, such as:
- research issues
- explore tactics for creating change
- meet with activists and community leaders working for change
- meet with legislators and other elected officials to raise their awareness and to advocate for change
- organize or participate in demonstrations or other public activities
- develop written or visual materials to raise awareness
- present the results of your internship to a small group
