Collective Memory Project – Immigration in the Lehigh Valley
NEW
The Alliance is working with the Collective Memory Project of the Lehigh Valley to record the faces and voices of the Lehigh Valley through oral history and photography, using a multi-lingual team that will listen to, record, and present the stories of individuals from the various cultures that make up the Lehigh Valley—including recent immigrants and descendents of earlier waves of immigration. Interviews will cover how and why families chose to settle in the Lehigh Valley, their memories of their original homes, and experiences here.
Project goals are to use the arts to transmit the message that immigration has been a vital factor in the development of the Lehigh Valley through a professional-quality display of portrait photographs with accompanying audio and text excerpts from the interviews. We will reach out to a variety of different audiences, including those who don’t often attend exhibits in local art galleries, so we plan to hold the exhibition in a range of non-traditional venues as well as galleries. Internship responsibilities will vary as the project progresses, but interns will work with the Collective Memory Project on activities such as:
-
Developing a timeline of successive waves of immigration in the Lehigh Valley
-
Scheduling interviews and photo sessions
-
Reviewing transcripts for accuracy and completeness; editing interview transcripts and selecting excerpts to include as part of the exhibit
-
Contacting potential venues for the display
-
Helping to plan a publication based on the interviews & photographs
-
Helping to write proposals for funding
We are looking for a student who can take significant responsibility in this project and who have a strong interest in diverse cultures and social justice. Good interpersonal skills are important, as interns will work with the public and with other organizations. Your specific academic major is not as important as your interest and ability to undertake a variety of tasks, and work effectively.
