There are many steps that can be taken to promote sustainability in food businesses. Today, there are numerous concerns that trouble businesses that are attempting to become more sustainable. This is because of the financial, environment, and psychological benefits that result from doing so.  If a business is willing to make sustainability a priority, the tasks to complete this process will get done but it is up to that organization to make these essential changes.

One of the first steps that can be taken to start this transition is to ask what organic options your current dealer or trader might offer.  This would allow for a gradual change to more organic products. Specifically in the Lehigh Valley, a business owner can reach out to the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture (PASA) to find local suppliers.

An organization can also take many different approaches to reducing the amount of waste and packaging it uses, which would further the sustainability of the business. For example, up to 95% of restaurant waste can be recycled or composted.  By using products that are made from recycled materials, the business would save a significant amount of resources, water, and energy.  This is because by recycling materials, one does not have to start from scratch and make a brand new product after every use.   Composting is also another way of reducing the amount of waste a business produces. Businesses today waste energy, especially restaurants. But, there are many local engineering and energy firms that work with these businesses to reduce the amount of energy they use, allowing them to improve the efficiency of their business and save money on utility bills. While this may take an extended period of time, there are also other steps that a business can take to further its sustainability.  This would include using cleaning products that are made from plants, which would have an instant effect on the health of its employees, customers, and environment

Many businesses are currently trying to become more sustainable and adopt policies and practices that protect its consumers, employees, and surroundings.  This transition is becoming more popular and well known as organizations are beginning to understand the impact that they have on the environment.
