The intent of this section is not to present a ‘complete picture’ of the history and issues in the Middle East—that would take hundreds of pages. Our goal is more modest: to represent news and viewpoints that are typically omitted, downplayed, or marginalized in the media and public discussion here in the U.S.

The area known to westerners as the ‘Middle East’ includes portions of northern Africa & southwest Asia and is home to over 300 million people. Millions of people have been displaced by war and violence and are currently refugees.
