Pam Ruch: Nature Journaling Workshops
Workshops offered by Pam Ruch:
Introduction to Nature Journaling: Saving the Earth one page at a time – adults
In this 45 minute to one-hour presentation I show how to put together a basic “Nature Journaling Kit.” More importantly, I explain how the simple discipline of noticing the world around us can bring joy to our lives and act as an antidote to the age of technology. This can be a slide presentation, or a hands-on workshop. I bring lists of resources, readings from favorite nature writers, and journal examples. At the end of the presentation, I lead a 10-minute blind contour drawing exercise.
Two-day Journaling Workshop – adults (best held in locations that have access to the outdoors)
Each session lasts 2 to 2 ½ hours. Day One focuses on the different reasons for journaling, and the meditative art of drawing nature. It includes several exercises: 1) The mysterious ways of nature: Finding natural objects that you do not fully understand and formulating questions; 2) Learning to See: Blind contour drawing exercise; 3) Looking up: A reductive drawing of the sky.
Day Two focuses on developing intimacy with nature through researching and writing, and telling nature’s stories. I bring examples of good observation-based nature writing. Writing exercises include 1) Removing stale similes: Using words in a thoughtful and non-cliché way; 2) Creative descriptions: Stretching the creative mind by describing natural objects without the use of adjectives; 3) Making connections: Practice in thinking about a natural object in as many ways as possible: botanically, personally, historically, ecologically.
What to bring: writing/drawing implements, binoculars (optional), camera (optional). Wear sun protection (sunscreen, a hat).
I provide: a spiral-bound Field Sketch Book for each participant; some art supplies; 10x insect magnifiers; field guides.
